Scope and Contents of the Materials

The Guillermo Rosales Papers contain writings and personal effects of Guillermo Rosales (1946-1993), late 20th century Cuban writer and journalist.

The collection contains manuscripts for various novels written by Rosales, including Júralo por Stalin, El Bunker Fantasma and El juego de la viola (1968), as well as articles and clippings written by and about him, respectively. The collection also contains correspondence; certificates and awards, including Rosales' first prize honor in the University of Miami's Letras de Oro literary competition; and an accompanying scrapbook with photographs of the event.

Biographical Note

Guillermo Rosales (1946-1993) was a Havana-born Cuban novelist most well-known for his short story collection El juego de la viola (1968), for which he was selected as a finalist for Cuba's Casa de las Américas literary competition.

Working as a journalist and writer in Cuba, Rosales left the island in 1979 for Spain, eventually settling in Miami and living between halfway houses. His experiences in Miami served as material for his autobiographical novella, La casa de los náufragos (1987).

Rosales suffered from schizophrenia throughout his life. He committed suicide in 1993, destroying the majority of his work before he died. An English translation of La casa de los náufragos titled The Halfway House was published posthumously by New Directions in 2009, and a collection of short stories, Leapfrog (New Directions, 2013), is forthcoming.
