Scope and Contents of the Materials

The collection of fragmentary texts and images documents cultural expressions from the Caribbean and South America. The items consist of many of the transistory materials grouped under ephemera such as posters, postcards, leaflets, tracts, special editions, programs and menus published in countries such as the Bahamas, Brasil, Cuba, Curaçao Grenada, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Puerto Rico and Trinidad and Tobago.

"J.S. Engler. Miami, FL. 1926. Three items of 1920s Nassau real estate ephemera promoting property ownership to black rsisdents of Miami, Florida. The real estate in Englerston Addition was advertised and marketed by J. S. Engler, owner of Engler's Public Market, 207 N.W. 10th St., Miami. The three items available are: a folded brochure 9 x 3 3/4 inches promoting 'industries' in Nassau open to those lacking formal education: fishing, tomatoes, and sponges. The chief aim of the brochure was to promote a 'once in a lifetime' opportunity, exhorting recipients: 'It should be every Bahamians' ambition to buy a home in the land of your birth!' while cautioning 'The time isn't far when land will be sold by he inch instead of the lot.' The second item, a folded map of Nassau's Master Suburb,' opens to a two-color 18 x 24 inch plat map of Englerston featuring hundreds of properties, many as small as 25 x 100 feet. The last item is the envelope in which the above items were mailed, addressed to a Cocoanut Grove, Florida resident and postmarked March 21, 1926." -oldimprints.com
