Title: Edwina Glenn Garfield and Dora F. Welti Correspondence Collection, 1947-1959Add to your cart.

ID: M0663

Creator: Garfield, Edwina Glenn (b. 1895)

Extent: 19.0 Boxes

Arrangement: Personal letters exchanged by Garfield and Welti with persons around the country occupy the first five boxes of the collection. They are organized by sender as many of the writers sent multiple letters with periodic updates on issues and projects they were working on, as well as events in their personal lives. The next four boxes labeled "subject files" contain mailings sent out by various organizations as well as articles, transcripts of speeches, and a variety of materials that deal with political and social causes. The "subject files" are arranged alphabetically except for the box devoted to Gerald L. K. Smith, which is arranged by date, and the box devoted to anti-mental health activism, which is also arranged by date. The next set of materials, the newsletters, are arranged alphabetically by folder and then by date within the folders.

Date Acquired: 04/04/0012

Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection consists of around 1000 letters, pamphlets, and documents pertaining to 1950's conservative activism. Garfield and Welti lived in South Florida and corresponded via letter, newspaper clippings, and self-produced pamphlets to conservative extremists around the country. The collection reflects anti-Communist, anti-African American, anti-mental health, and anti-semitic sentiment and activism.

The combination of personal letters, newsletters, newspaper clippings and magazine articles in the collection presents an incredibly well-rounded representation of the day to day lives the Americans who resisted the Civil Rights Movement and lived in fear of Communism and the U.S.S.R. The many newsletters and political tracts within the collection are invaluable research materials, while the personal letters create an intimate, nuanced picture of the lives of the writers in 1950s America.

In the 1940s and 50s, psychology and psychoanalysis experienced a surge in popularity aided by the introduction of psychiatric drugs. Along with these developments came a right-wing anti-mental health movement of which Welti and Garfield were a part. Supporters of the movement accused the mental health movement of being Communist and anti-American. They believed mental institutions and drugs were an effort to keep the American population subdued. This box exclusively contains materials related to the anti-mental health movement, including a contemporary artical about the public deterioration of Governor Earl K. Long.
