Description from American Social, Women's, Business & Literary History Catalogue by Carmen D. Valentino, American Historical Manuscripts:

"Collection of 739 black & white photographs, 1925 to 1933, documenting the family and social life of Mr. & Mrs. E. W. Monroe and their three children (Jimmy b. 1924; Luella b. c. 1916; and Billy b. c. 1909) while living in suburban Buenos Aires, Argentina, 1925 to 1929, and subsequently back at the family homestead in Monticello, White County, Indiana, 1929 to 1933. We note that one of the Monroes' named Argentine employees-Tomara-returned with them to Indiana and continued to work there as son Jimmy's nanny. White-ink captions identify over half the photographs; the subjects of many of the un-captioned scenes are easily inferred.

The elder Monroes and their three children are captured here in a wide variety of social, recreational, and family settings with and without Argentine friends, fellow expatriate U.S. citizens, household servants, and local gauchos living in the Buenos Aires suburbs of Belgrano, Palermo, Lujan, and Zarate. Among occasions the Monroes and their peers clearly enjoyed we note equestrian events, Carnival, picnics (with animal half-carcasses roasted 'Asado'-style, on vertical spits), beach excursions, golf games, country estate weekends, and Argentine Independence Day. The Argentine portion of the album also pays considerable attention to young daughter Luella's activities with her Argentine & U.S. girlfriends who were involved in a Brownie troop, the Belgrano Girls School, and the local 'American' high school.

From 1929 to 1933 the Monroes lived in Chicago, Ill., and Monticello, Indiana. Subjects captured in the second section of the collection include family reunions, picnics (still with Asado-style roasts), Billy's matriculation at Purdue University, Billy's wedding, 1933 Chicago World's Fair visits, and Luella's first year at Depauw University-including a large group shot of her sorority there (Delta Zeta).

739 original black & white photographs, most measuring from 1.75 x 2.75 inches to 3.5 x 5.5 inches, affixed with black-paper corners to the black-paper leaves of 2 contemporary albums, both oblong octavo, bindings damaged (1 cover detached but present; 1 cover gone; I embossed "E. W. Monroe"). Of these 739 photographs, 470 photos document the Monroes' experiences in South America (mostly Argentina-but also including a view of 5 black workers at a Trinidad pitch lake), and 269 document their lives in or around Monticello, Indiana.

Together with: 28 loose photographs capturing events after LUella's marriage in the 1940's."
