Scope and Contents of the Materials

The Alan Crockwell Collection contains a variety of materials from different sources that document the history of Miami, Coconut Grove, Coral Gables, and greater Miami-Dade County. Much of the content is related to Ralph Middleton Munroe and his family. Topically, the papers also address criminal history in Miami-Dade County, historic buildings in Coconut Grove including the Barnacle and the Coconut Grove Library, the history of the University of Miami, and the early settling of Miami-Dade County. The dates of items range from 1873 into the 1970s.

Biographical Note

Alan Crockwell, a biology teacher at The Carollton School in Coconut Grove, moved from Buffalo to Miami in 1977. Crockwell co-founded the Miami Memorabilia Collector's Club in 1991. He has published numerous articles on Miami history and its collectibles.

This series consists of historic early 20th century photograph albums of Miami, Coconut Grove, the Coral Gables, greater Miami Dade County, Jacksonville, Orlando, Havana (Cuba), Daytona Beach, and other areas. Among the photograph albums are a 1926 album of photographs of houses in Daytona with accompanying prices from the H.B. Schulty Realty Company; three albums from the estate of William George Coates, owner of the Miami Transfer Company, and his family, with content ranging from the late 19th century until the mid-20th century; a family album from the estate of Richard Carney; a family album from the Peggy Myers Estate, of the Myers Electric Coral Gables Company; three family albums from the Anna Wilson Estate; a family album from the Annie Fordham Estate; and a photograph album from Leo Hauser, depicting early 20th century Miami, Coconut Grove, and Coral Gables.
