The Office of the President of the University of Miami quite naturally coincides with the establishment of the University of Miami in 1926.  The President serves as the chief adminstrative officer for the University of Miami, and reports to the Board of Trustees. Bowman Foster Ashe was elected as the first president of the university on November 3, 1926, by the then Board of Regents. Ashe served the university as president until his death on December 6, 1952.

Jay F. W. Pearson, Vice president under Bowman F. Ashe, was elected as the second president of the University of Miami on January 12, 1953. Pearson served as president until 1962, when he accepted the position as the first Chancellor of the University. Pearson died on August 8, 1965.

The board of Trustees elected Henry King Stanford as the third president of the University of Miami on April 18, 1962. Stanford served as President until his retirement in 1981.
