Name: Nazario Sargén, Andrés (1916-2004)

Historical Note: Andrés Nazario Sargén was born in Zaza del Medio, Cuba in 1916.  Along with his older brother Aurelio, Nazario Sargén was active in the Ortodoxo political party in Cuba in the 1940s, organizing his brother’s successful campaign for a seat in Cuba’s House of Representatives in 1948.  After Fulgencio Batista’s coup in 1952, Nazario Sargén and his family joined the Second Escambray Front (Segundo Frente del Escambray – SFE), moving into the Escambray Mountains to fight against Batista’s regime.  After the 1959 success of the Revolution led by Fidel Castro and his 26th of July Movement, the leaders of the Front were persecuted.  In 1961, along with Eloy Gutiérrez Menoyo, Nazario Sargén was one of 13 commanders of the Front to escape Cuba and form Alpha 66 to take up the armed fight against Fidel Castro’s regime.  He served the organization in various capacities until his death on October 6, 2004.
