Name: Maceo y Grajales, Antonio

Historical Note: Antonio Maceo y Grajales was born in Santiago de Cuba on 14 July 1848. He joined the insurgent army in 1868. His natural military ability, patriotism and personal magnetism as a leader soon brought him to the forefront, making him second only to Máximo Gómez. Maceo alone of all the Cuban generals refused to sign the Treaty of Zanjón after the Ten Years War against Spain in 1878. He went to the United States and other countries in America seeking support for the cause of Cuban Independence. During the War of Independence, conducting the Invasion from "Oriente a Occidente," Maceo was surrounded by a Spanish force and killed on 7 December 1896.
