The University of Miami's Institute for Advanced Studies of the Americas and the College of Arts & Sciences are co-sponsors of the publication.

The 120-page report was written by E. Earl Wilson, M.A.I. and E. D. Keefer, M.A.I. for the University of Miami in 1953.  The purpose of this appraisal was to estimate the market value of the properties of the University of Miami as of May 15, 1953.

The publication provides descriptions and evaluations of the university's parcels in the North Campus, president's residence, and the South Campus, such as zoning, maps, photographs and architectural plans.

The 40-page publication depicts Arthur Vining “Art” Davis's life with photographs and press articles, who was an American industrialist, investor, and philanthropist.  It was created by The Arthur Vining Davis Foudations for their Board of Trustees Meeting held on February 6-8, 2014 at The Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables, Florida.  He was a trustee of the University of Miami from 1953-1962.
ASU0111 Atomic-bombed roof tiles from Hiroshima University, 1945-2013Add to your cart.

The Association of Hiroshima University's Sending Atomic-bombed Roof Tiles donated five pieces of roof tiles to the University of Miami in January 2013 together with a letter from Hiroshima University's president, English brochures of the University, a picture book on atomic bomb victims in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and a picture book on the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake.

The tiles were collected from the bottom of Motoyasu River, which was ground zero of the atomic bomb explosion.  The largest roof tile measures 5 inches by 7 inches. Their safety is certified by the Institute of Radiation Effect (Japan) as a guarantee that they will not cause health damage to humans.

The donor wishes the tiles to be exhibited and used as an educational tool to spread the Association's call for everlasting peace and absolute opposition to nuclear weapons.  The University of Miami was contacted because it had sent Hiroshima University some seeds of a sabal palmetto tree in 1951 to help in greening the University grounds.

"Conversations with Dr. William Butler" is a series of videotaped interviews of 10 key administrators, faculty, trustees, and alumni of the University of Miami by Dr. Butler dated from mid to late 1990s.  There are 4 additional video and 1 audio tapes on Dr. Butler's career at the UM also.

The interviewees were Dr. Henry King Stanford, Ron Fraser, Ron Stone, William W. Sandler, Dr. Pat Whitely, James Yasser, Mike Abrams, Walter and Russell Etling, Dr. Flipse, Rev. Minich, and Dr. Edward T. Foote.

Dr. Butler is the author of the 2008 book "Embracing the world: the University of Miami from cardboard college to international and global acclaim."

A preliminary statement was presented by Dr. Archie McNeal, who was the first director of the library.

Elizabeth Erickson was an instructor in the University of Miami's physical education program during 1928 and 1931. The collection contains black and white photographs of students and colleagues in the program, other UM-related subjects, and Miami.

There is also a 2-page essay titled "Physical Education Program, University of Miami, 1928-1931, Elizabeth (Betty) Erickson, Instructor" in the collection.  It was written especially for the UM Archives and received on March 31, 1975.

Epiphany is the student-run arts and literature magazine of the University of Miami.  All students of the university were invited to submit poetry, short stories, creative essays, timely articles about arts in the community, artwork, and photography for publication.

The collection “Feminism Teaching Materials” contains class schedule, reading list, teaching notes, student essays and presentations, visual materials, as well as scholarly articles and news reports on feminism donated by Dr. Martha Lizabeth Phelps to the University Archives in May 2016.  The materials come from the course "Women in Warfare (POL 391)" she taught in spring 2016.

Dr.  Martha Lizabeth Phelps is currently a Full Time Lecturer at the Department of Political Science, College of Arts and Sciences, University of Miami.  She received her Ph.D. from the University of Miami in 2012.

ASU0105 Focus: America radio talk show audio recordings, 1975-1976Add to your cart.

"Focus: America" radio talk show was created by Richard (Ric) Arenstein and Larry Wallenstein, both juniors in the Communications Department, University of Miami in 1975.  The show, originally started as a local program "Focus: Miami," was produced at the UM's campus radio station WVUM-FM, and Arenstein interviewed local personalities and celebrities visiting Miami.

After the successful first season, the tapes of the talk show were mailed to more than 70 college stations across the country under the name "Focus: America."  In the senior year Arenstein and his new associate, Chuck Bortunick, traveled under a grant from the Burger King Corp. to tape interviews of celebrities in other parts of the country.  The show ended at the graduation of Arenstein.

Frederic Zeigen Collection consists of materials on foudation and early years of the University of Miami, such as costitutional bylaws, meeting minutes, Board of Regents, first and second annual reports, and newspaper clippings on university-related events.

It also contains several additional folders on his company "Bankers Land and Investment Corporation," his interest in art and Michigan authors, and his scrapbook titled "The Idealist."

The folder titled "Photographs - 1926" is missing as of May 22, 2015.

This University of Miami Friends of the Library records contains 11 boxes of audio recordings of their events held between 1960 and 1977. See the attached container list for the list of the speakers and topics.  The tapes were professionally remasterd and digitized in 2012 to commemorate Richter's 50th anniversary.

This audio recording contains an Undergraduate Student Government lecture by George Schuyler presented at the Student Union, University of Miami, on April 21, 1966.

On the case, the speaker is identified as Charles (Chas) Schuyler.  However, the typed memo from the donor to the library director and a handwritten note by the library director identify the speaker as George Schuyler.

The report "Checklist of plants" was a publication of the Gifford Arboretum, Department of Biology, University of Miami dated October 1993.  It was prepared by John Pascarella, Curator.  It lists all planted and spontaneous plants found in the Gifford Arboretum and Taylor Alexander Microbiome.

Haitian Student Organization collection consists of memorabilila kept in a time capsule, such as organizational records, event brochures, meeting minutes, newsletters, photographs, Haitian national flag, and news clippings, buried on October 16, 2004 and opened on October 18, 2014.  The collection was donated by the Planet Kreyol Haitian Student Organization of the University of Miami to the University Archives in January 2015.

The donor, Planet Kreyol, was founded in 1993 at the University of Miami as the Haitian Student Organization and later renamed as Planet Kreyol. Their mission is to promote cultural awareness while servicing the community and preserving the ancestry of Haiti.

The initial effort to prepare the 75-page publication "Hope amid chaos: an architectural plan for South Dade" was completed during the Fall Semester, 1992 by a class of the School of Architecture, University of Miami.

In September 1992, a few weeks after Hurricane Andrew devastated South Dade County, a design studio at the senior level decided to develop the course around the issue of the role of architecture in a period of urban crisis.

The names of the students who worked on the project were: Jaime Acosta, Alberto De Armas, Marie Denis, Nelson Felipe, Francisco J. Garcia Iglesias, Ines Hegedus, Antonio Mena, Patrick Panetta, Maureen Pflugfelder, Garciela Torres, Jose A. Vidal, and Thomas F. Weber.

Faculty advisor for the project was Felipe J. Prestamo, Ed.D, Professor of Architecture.

The University Archives holds volume one, which was donated to the University of Miami Library in 2003 in memory of Dr. Marion Jefferson.

The publication used to belong to the University of Miami's Law Library, it was withdrawn from their collection and donated to the University Archives.

The 90 minute video recording contains an oral history interview of Mrs. Marcella U. (Ungar) Werblow.  She was a daughter of Arthur A. Ungar, who was a trustee of the university from 1930s to 1960s.  She was also an aunt of Leonard Abess, Jr., a former chair of the Board of Trustees.

In the interview, Mrs. Werblow discusses her childhood in Miami, including the 1926 hurricane, her education, attending the University of Miami, her father’s involvement with the University of Miami, the Orange Bowl, Westview Country Club and other community causes, as well as anti-Semitism in Miami history.

The interview was conducted by Arva Moore Parks McCabe, a renowned anthor and Miami historian, a trustee of the University of Miami, and an ardent supporter of the University of  Miami Libraries.

The oral history program was funded by the University of Miami Libraries, and the project was coordinated by Laura Capell, Digital Special Collections and Oral Histories Librarian.

Items in the collection include organizational records, photographs, clippings, and jackets worn by the members.  The collection was donated to the Archives and Special Collections in March 2004 by C. Rhea Warren, former Chief of the Iron Arrow Honor Society.

The James S. Penny photograph collection contains 36 black and white photographs taken by a University of Miami journalism professor and his students depicting UM and Miami-related subjects from 1948 to 1952.

There are two folders in this collection, the first of which is titled "33 Photographs taken by James Penny (Prof of Journalism at U of M) and his students from 1948-1952."  The second folder is titled  "U of M students of Journalism - 1 photograph, and  Exhibition at the U of Missouri of the Annual Photography Contest Winners - 2 photographs."

Mrs. James Penny gave the pictures to Richter Library on July 17, 1984.

The John Thom Holdsworth Collection consists of two typewritten manuscripts, "Thirty Years of the University of Miami" and "Origins and Evolution of Universities and Colleges," written by Dr. John Thom Holdsworth, who was the first Dean of the School of Business Administration from 1929 to 1941.

"Thirty Years of the University of Miami" has 28 chapters in 28 folders plus 2 additional folders that contain related information.  It was written in mid 1950s and given to Richter Library in 1973.

"Origins and Evolution of Universities and Colleges" is 165 pages long.  Publication date is unknown.  It was donated by the school to the University Archives in September 2014.

ASU0177 Juan Ramon Jimenez collection, 1973Add to your cart.

The collection contains poems, two recorded university events in 1973, and a plaque of Juan Ramon Jimenez (1881-1958), who was a Spanish poet received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1956.  He and his wife Zenobia Camprubi lived in Miami from 1939 to 1942, and he taught classes and lectured at the University of Miami from 1940 to 1942.

The first audio tape is titled "Juan Ramon Jimenez Program (titled Tribute on the reel) by UM Students" held at Richter Library's Brockway Lecture Hall on October 11, 1973.  The second tape is titled "Jimenez Event" on October 13, 1973.  The tapes are in 1/4 reel-to-reel format.  Recording speed and length are unknown.  They are not digitized and transcripts of the recordings are not available.

A bronze plaque was dedicated by the University of Miami on October 12, 1973, which reads "Juan Ramon Jimenez, 1881-1958, Nobel Prize in Literature 1956, Lecturer in Spanish in this university 1940-1942, "Quisiera que mi libro fuese, como es el cielo for la noche, todo verdad resente, sin historia."  The size of the plaque is 11x14 inches.

A 4-page note card (4.5x7.75 inches) printed in black and white contains a poster "Centenario de Juan Ramon Jimenez 1881-1981," two handwritten poems, a picture of the plaque held at the University of Miami Library, and his statue at Colegio Nacional in Vitoria, Alava.

A 20-page booklet (5.75x8 inches) printed in black and white contains a self-portrait and 19 handwritten and typed poems.

The book and DVD set of the Kennedy Center Honors 2010 contains biographical information and professional achievements of Jerry Herman, who is an American composer and lyricist known for Broadway hit musicals.  Mr. Herman (B.S. ’53 and D.F.A. ’80) is one of the University of Miami’s most distinguished alumni and a lifelong supporter of the University.  The University Archives provided research assistance and historical images for the publication.

Earlier editions are subtitle "United Black Students' Handbook," and later editions are subtitled "Chronicle of Black Affairs."

A 1969 brochure of Black Culture Week was also found with the booklets.

A DVD recording of the event was donated by J. William Hipp, former Dean of the school on February 2, 2015.

A program of its 10th anniversary celebration (held on January 23, 2015, 1 page) as well as three kinds of brochures of the music library were donated by Nancy Zavac, Head, Weeks Music Library on February 2, 2015.

The Martha Dorn collection contains an M-Club sweater, various University of Miami publications, a portrait, newspaper clippings, and other items of memorabilia. She was a student at the university from 1936 to 1940.

The 17-page unpublished biography of Doris Beaumont Ludwig was written by Theresa Gesse circa 2000 and donated to the University Archives in April 2013.  Ludwig was a nurse and a midwifery educator, who was born in London in 1902 and passed away in Miami in 1988.  Gesse was an alumna and a former faculty of the University of Miami's School of Nursing and Health Studies, and she received the school’s Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1999.

The Olga Espejo Facsimile Map Collection consists of photo reproductions of rare maps held by the Special Collections of Otto G. The Special Collections holds more than 3,000 maps, charts, plans, and views, which dates  from the sixteenth to the twentieth centuries and covers nearly all areas of the world, with an emphasis on what was then termed the New World, including Florida, the Caribbean, Latin America, and the United States.

The 27-page report "The professional preparation and placement of Cuban refugee teachers" was written by Herbert W. Wey and John F. Newport and published by the University of Miami in 1964.  It was published under a grant from the United States Office of Education.

During the spring and summer of 1963, a pilot project for the professional preparation and placement of Cuban refugee teachers was conducted at the University of Miami.  It enabled thirty-two of the thirty-four Cuban refugees who were in the program to be employed as regular teachers in the Dade County (Miami, Florida) schools.

The University Archives assumes it was published by the University of Miami's Department of Biology and donated to the University of Miami Library in the 1970s.

ASU0247 University of Miami ceremonial mace, 1950s-1980sAdd to your cart.

The ceremonial mace in the collection of the University Archives was donated by the Office of Commencement of the University of Miami in 2010.  It is a symbolic weapon to protect the ideals of truth, justice, and leaning carried at the head of the academic procession during the commencement ceremony by the Grand Marshal, whose symbolic duty is the protection of the University, its people, and its processes.

There are no documents on the ceremonial maces used by the university in the past and present, but the Archives assumes that the item donated was the second mace used from 1950s to 1980s.  Historical images of the first and second maces are available in the University of Miami Historical Photograph Collection.

According to the Office of Commencement, the current mace dates back to 1986, which was sculpted by UM professor of art William Ward.

The collection consists of CDs and reports on demolished buildings on the University of Miami's Coral Gables campus.  The CDs contain current (2011) and historical photographs and blueprints of the buildings. The reports list thumbnail images and descriptions and blueprints of the photographs.

The study was conducted for the University of Miami by Elizabeth Chifari of Holland & Knight in Miami.  The historical images and building plans in the reports were provided by the University Archives.

The Historical Photograph Collection holds over 500,000 photographs, negatives, and slides that document the University’s growth from 1920s through the presidency of Henry King Stanford in 1970s.  Especially rich are images of UM sports, the expansion of each campus, student life, and special events such as commencement ceremonies.

The collection consists of memorandums, newsletters, and a brochure written by the Housing Office of the University of Miami for married students from 1967 to 1972.  It also includes several issues of “Married Student News” written by the Married Student Association of the university from 1971 to 1972.

The documents were collected by Frederick Karrenberg (B.S. ‘68; M.S. ‘70), who lived in married student housing during the period, and donated to the University Archives by his partner Elizabeth Chifari (UM School of Law ’93) in July 2010.

The Office of Media Relations is a department of the University Communications, and they are responsible for communicating information regarding the University’s achievements, faculty research, programs, and events to the local, regional, national, and international news media.

University of Miami Legacy contains photographs and media selected from the University of Miami Historical Photographs Collection and the Oral History Collection housed in the Special Collections of the University of Miami Libraries.  The inspiration for this website was a Richter Library exhibit developed by Tina Surman and Ruthanne Vogel in celebration of the University's 75th Anniversary.

This site is the product of the efforts of two University of Miami librarians. Lyn MacCorkle was responsible for the database development and web design, and Ruthanne Vogel worked with item selection and provided the historical research for the textual content.
