Abstract

The Archive of the New Urbanism was established in 2004 by Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk, one of the principal founders of the New Urbanism movement to provide a record of the initiation and evolution of the New Urbanism as seen in projects, articles, books, research, compendia, notes and other materials. The New Urbanism is an interdisciplinary movement whose goals are to promote urban reinvestment and alternatives to suburban sprawl. The principles of the movement were articulated in 1993 in the Charter of the New Urbanism.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

The collection includes drawings, project folios, books and manuscripts, periodicals, article clippings, correspondence, videos, CDs, DVDs, audio cassettes and other materials related to New Urbanism theory, writing, and design.

Administrative Information

Accruals:

While the current organization attempts to prepare for growth, future submittals may require the addition and/or reorganization of a Series or Subseries.

Peter Katz donated 16 boxes of New Urbanism related documents in October 2011 and another 8 boxes in November 2011.

The Congress for the New Urbanism (CNU) donated 27 boxes of New Urbanist materials in January 2009.  These materials await processing. In July 2012 the Congress of the New Urbanism donated 2 more boxes of CNU competition related records.

1 Box of materials were donated by CNU in January of 2012 .

Access Restrictions: This collection is available to researchers for Room Use Only by appointment in the Architecture Library, University of Miami. For further information and to make an appointment, please call (305)284.5282 or email gsantana@miami.edu

Acquisition Source: Immediate source of acquisition was from Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk, with subsequent donations by Peter Katz, and The Congress of the New Urbanism.

Acquisition Method:

Donations

The Archive was began with letter from Dean Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk to all Congress for the New Urbanism members in January 2002, soliciting materials. Members of the Congress of the New Urbanism provided the first the first material for the collection. The arrangement and initial description for the series was developed in January 2004 by graduate students Wyn Bradley and Christina Miller under the direction of University of Miami Richter Library Archivist Craig Likness and Dean Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk.

Related Materials: Congress of the New Urbanism Records. ARC8000 For more information please see http://proust.library.miami.edu/findingaids/?p=collections/findingaid&id=1021.

Related Publications: Duany, Andres, Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk, and Jeff Speck. 2000. Suburban nation: the rise of sprawl and the decline of the American Dream. New York: North Point Press.

Processing Information: The material can be filed under several Series. Thus, as much key word information as possible is included in each item description to allow for key word searching. For instance, charrette publications may be found under Series I: Project, Plans, and Codes, or, Series XIII: Firms and Institutions, so they should be sought under both series. The reason for this is that the records of a project may take many forms and be produced by many sources or firms. Similarly, one firm may produce many projects so their filing together facilitates study of the firm's oeuvre.

Finding Aid Revision History: Revised Summer 2006 by Megan Mclaughin and Santiago Jimenez. Revised August-December, 2011 by Beata Bergen. Revised August 2012 by Gilda Santana.
